The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday criticised the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal over its latest nominations to the Rajya Sabha, alleging that the party had overlooked its grassroots workers.

In a social media post, the West Bengal unit of the BJP — the TMC’s principal political rival in the state — questioned the party’s decision to nominate individuals who, it claimed, were not associated with the organisation during its years in opposition.

“What message does this send to TMC’s grassroots workers?” the BJP asked, adding, “Couldn’t the Trinamool Congress find a single political leader from within its own ranks? Not one dedicated party worker for four Rajya Sabha seats?”

The BJP further alleged that the nominations had gone to personalities from outside the party’s traditional organisational structure rather than long-serving workers who had supported the party during challenging political periods.

The TMC has nominated Babul Supriyo, former West Bengal Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, and actor Koel Mallick for the four Rajya Sabha seats.

Defending its choices, the TMC said the nominees reflected the party’s commitment to resilience and to safeguarding the rights and dignity of citizens. In its official announcement, the party expressed confidence that the nominees would uphold Trinamool’s legacy and its commitment to public service.
